About Me

I am a hands-on tech leader with 30 years of experience in the industry, engineering big, secured systems of various sorts before moving into VP and CTO roles for nearly two decades. I have led engineering, IT, and Security at Evernote and Livongo, growing teams to ~130 and ~180 people, respectively. I stayed sharp as the de facto lead data engineer for all warehouse/lake/etc. systems at both companies while executing management tasks. I utilize my expertise in early-stage startups, medical technology, data engineering, and scaling technical teams and infrastructure to help clients overcome challenges and ultimately succeed.

Career Highlights

After receiving degrees from Stanford and UC Berkeley, I designed and built multiple secure platforms used by tens of millions of people. Those included cryptographic authentication infrastructure used by government and military agencies (at CoreStreet), knowledge management for more than 150 million global users (Evernote), remote chronic disease management with > 3 billion records (Livongo, then Teladoc), and diagnostic medical imaging (Cleerly). As a CTO, I enjoyed building technology teams of up to 180 employees at these previous organizations. Most notably, I joined Livongo to lead the 15-person engineering and IT teams, which were building software and services to help 14,000 people with diabetes live healthier and happier lives. Over four years, we grew into a team of 180, providing services for more than half a million people living with diabetes, hypertension, prediabetes, and behavioral health conditions. This was a tremendous journey, culminating in an IPO and subsequent merger with Teladoc Health.

Techquity Solutions

I am passionate about utilizing my expertise to help early-stage companies build teams from the bottom up and mentor first-time CTOs or heads of engineering to help them navigate common challenges. I enjoy solving complex data challenges, particularly medical technology security concerns, and guiding teams/organizations through releasing and scaling.

Innovation & Impact

  • Key role in Livongo IPO and $15B merger with Teladoc

  • Scaled Livongo to providing services to over half a million people with diabetes, hypertension, prediabetes, and behavioral health conditions

  • Directly contributed to the design, implementation, and maintenance of Livongo’s data infrastructure, which incorporated billions of health data points to power AI-driven algorithms and internal analytics

  • Built Livongo engineering and IT team to ~180

  • Scaled Evernote to over 150 million users, with over 20M active each month

  • Built Evernote team to ~130 and was the primary builder for platform back-end, API, service architecture, data warehouse

Why Techquity?

The opportunity to guide tech leaders matters to me. Early in my career, I received invaluable mentorship and advice from more senior industry veterans who had lived through many of the same challenges I was facing. It helped shape me into the hands-on tech leader I became, and now that I’m showing a little gray around the temples, I have been able to provide similar help for early-stage leaders. It’s great to work together with Techquity peers who also have similar experiences and help various early-stage founders overcome challenges.
