The next great wave of artificial intelligence — agentic AI — is drawing comparisons to the early days of the internet. In a recent MarketWatch article by Jon Swartz, industry veteran Anthony Bay, a partner at Techquity and former executive at Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon, shares why patience and perspective are key as this emerging technology finds its footing.

“These revolutions happen very slowly, and then they go vertically and take off,” Bay said, comparing today’s agentic AI moment to the internet in 1996. “It took a couple years for the hype around the internet to catch on and become a reality in the market. The same thing will apply to AI, whether generative, agentic, or some other form.”

Bay’s insights reflect his decades-long experience leading through pivotal technology shifts — from personal computing and the internet to mobile, cloud, and now AI. His perspective underscores a recurring pattern: early skepticism gives way to transformative adoption.

Agentic AI: The New “Website Moment”

Bay’s comments are echoed by Lyle Pratt, CEO of Vida AI, who described voice AI agents as “the new website.” Just as every business eventually needed a website in the early 2000s, Pratt predicts a similar adoption curve for AI agents — especially as organizations learn to operationalize these tools effectively.

According to the article, a stunning 91% of executives worldwide say they’re ramping up AI adoption, and 74% view it as critical to their success. As AI matures, its impact is expanding far beyond experimentation — becoming a strategic pillar for modern enterprises.

A Transformative Shift in Work and Technology

The piece also highlights research from Futurum and NVIDIA forecasting that agentic AI could automate up to $4 trillion worth of human labor globally by 2030, ushering in what Futurum calls a “profound evolution of work itself.”

For Bay, this parallels the internet’s explosive rise once it hit the inflection point of mass business adoption:

“When the internet hit the peak of the S curve, the adoption of websites among businesses jumped from 30% to 80% quickly,” Bay noted. “We’re going to see the same with agentic AI in the next few years.”

Techquity’s Perspective

At Techquity, we’re proud to see our partners contributing to the broader conversation about AI’s future. As organizations across industries explore how agentic systems can augment teams, improve operations, and unlock new opportunities, Techquity continues to help leaders navigate this evolution with clarity and purpose.

“AI isn’t just another technology trend — it’s a shift in how work happens,” Bay’s comments remind us. “And that’s exactly where the next wave of innovation begins.”
